What is Plan S?

Plan S is an initiative for Open Access publishing that was launched in September 2018. The plan is supported by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funders. Plan S requires that, from 2020, scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms.

How does the UKSCL relate to Plan S?

The UKSCL Model Institutional Open Access Policy is seen a mechanism by which institutions can support academics in the retention of choice as to publication venue, and as a means of constraining costs in the event that publisher transformational agreements prove to be unaffordable by institutions.

When will Plan S come into effect?

Implementation of Plan S will take place from 1 January 2020, having impact on either 1) existing grants, 2) new projects/grants or, at the latest, 3) new calls. cOAlition S members will implement the new requirements in their own policies.
